Types of Dental Emergencies
Toothache
Toothaches can be caused by broken or chipped teeth, dangerous infections and damaged fillings. Tooth pain can be sharp, throbbing or constant and symptoms may also include sensitivity to hot or cold, and pain during chewing. Early intervention is recommended to prevent the need for more extensive and invasive treatments.
Tooth Knocked Out
Facial injuries, lost and displaced teeth require immediate dental care. Please call us ASAP in the event of dental trauma.
Lost Filling / Crown
A lost filling or crown may be accompanied by sensitivity and pain as delicate parts of your tooth are exposed. With this comes increased risk of decay and infection due to exposed dentine (soft tooth structure) and cleaning difficulties. With early intervention, a lost filling or crown can often can often be replaced without further complications. In the meantime, it’s important to keep the tooth as clean as possible and avoid food or drinks which may cause irritation and decay.
Broken Tooth
Broken, cracked or chipped teeth are usually more irritating than painful. Whilst they may not cause any immediate discomfort, when left untreated, a broken tooth can turn into a painful toothache. Treatment varies depending on the severity of the broken tooth. Therefore, having the tooth checked (sooner rather than later) is recommended to decrease the likelihood of extensive treatment.
Bleeding Gums
The most common reason for bleeding gums is gum disease or inflammation. When left untreated, gum disease can cause teeth to become loose and fall out. Whilst bleeding gums can also indicate less serious conditions, it’s important to have them checked and treated as soon as possible.
Wisdom Teeth
Wisdom teeth often cause problems because our mouth lacks the space to accommodate them.
Problems that can occur in wisdom teeth that:
Remain completely under the gums: Wisdom teeth can become trapped (impacted) inside your jaw. Sometimes they can develop infections or cysts which can damage the surrounding teeth.
Emerge partially above the gums: partially erupted teeth are a magnet for bacteria that can cause gum disease and infection.
Having your wisdom teeth removed may save you from pain and/or further oral complications. However, not all patients need their wisdom teeth removed. It’s important to seek personalised dental advice if you experience any pain near your wisdom teeth and/or the surrounding gums.
